Our first ever visit to Audley end and something of a personal connection for one half of BYRGA GENIHT – James Syrett studied at Magdalene College, Cambridge, which was founded by Sir Thomas Audley.

Sadly, nothing remains of the Benedictine monastery that Audley converted into his home in 1538, except a few fragments of recycled masonry in the service block (below).

The overseer of the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII, Audley is sadly not one of the heroes of the story of English culture. It is said that he was so unpleasant that his own wife did not attend his funeral.

Who knows what mysteries used to reside at this site?
