Harlow – City of Light
7 July 2023

After a visit to the Harlow Roman Temple site to discuss its potential for development, we dropped in to Harlow Museum. The gardens are well-kept and charming, but the big surprise was the collection of Roman-period jewellery, most of which was excavated at the Temple itself. Designs included lozenge brooches, hexagonal designs and ones bearing a striking resemblance to the scabbard bosses from the Sutton Hoo and Staffordshire Hoard treasures. The evidence for a continuation of a tradition of sacred geometry grows stronger with each new discovery.
Harlow Roman Temple and Harlow Museum are both free to visit, and well worth a trip for anyone interested in the legacy of Ancient Rome in Britain.
