ICON: Vita Sackville-West

Last year we took a look at Eddie Sackville-West, heir of Knole in Kent. It only seems appropriate that this year we focus on his cousin, the more famous Vita Sackville-West.

She is known to history as an author, but by far her greatest contribution to the country house world was her famous garden at Sissinghurst Castle. The innovative use of colour in the garden, combined with its ability to join rooms with distinctive styles influenced gardens right down the 20th century, greatly aided by Vita's weekly gardening column in The Observer. Not all of her horticultural advice has survived the test of time, but her creation continues to draw visitors from around the world. The garden is intimate, restful, and gently uplifting, much like Vita herself.

It is interesting that her most creatively brilliant period was during her relationship with author Virginia Woolf, between 1925 and 1935. Being part of the Bohemian set, she was regularly surrounded by other artists, writers, and musicians. A timely reminder that when we get out of our silos and collaborate across disciplines, we can make achievements that last long after our time.
