In Hoc Signo at Magdalene College, Cambridge

17 March 2026

A proud moment for James Syrett as In Hoc Signo is exhibited in the chapel of Magdalene College, Cambridge, his alma mater. The exhibition run is one week, from 17 to 24 March, commencing with a lecture to the MCR (postgraduates and Fellows), and a High Table dinner and discussion in the College's Combination Room. It was a rare opportunity for both of us to dust off our Cambridge academic gowns!

This is the first time In Hoc Signo has been shown in a place of worship, and they look very much at home. Dean of Chapel, Rev. Sarah Atkins, was fascinated to hear about our research and the development of the art.

The chapel is an excellent setting for In Hoc Signo, as both sculptures have sockets for use as processional crosses in liturgy, as they show important art historical aspects of our research, explaining core Christian and Jewish iconography. However, there is an even deeper connection to the space, which we had not anticipated — the floor depicted in the stained glass of the east window underneath St. Mary Magdalene (the college's namesake) shows the pattern that is key to In Hoc Signo II: Trinity ("Syrett's Construction" / the Auseklis — the pattern which when applied to the faces of a cube provides the projections of the rhombic dodecahedron).
