The Saxon crosses at Sandbach
The Saxon crosses at Sandbach

Byrga Geniht and Thegns of Mercia recently made a joint pilgrimage to two sites of ancient historic interest to England: St Wystan's Church, Repton, Derbyshire, and the Sandbach ninth-century crosses at Sandbach, Cheshire. In both cases these superb cultural treasures are often overlooked by architectural historians focused on later periods, but the continuities and revivals that underpin the cultural story of this island owe much to what can still be seen in these relics. All will feature in future Byrga Geniht lectures and seminars relating to sixteenth-century and eighteenth-century antiquarian buildings.
