TAKE FIVE - A Sister Showcase
8 August 2024
We are extremely grateful for the invitation to a private view of this incredibly rich exhibition of works by five female artists.
Held at 54 The Gallery in Mayfair, the exhibition shows a fantastic diversity of media and styles. The works above (from left to right) are by:
Alison Bournes — A ceramicist who explores human emotion. She worries in an interview screening in the basement of the gallery that some people find her work "too sad", but we find huge strength in the detailed expressions of her busts. Alison is constantly pushing herself to try new styles and methods. and her art does not feel static in any way.
Jill Desborough — Jill sculpts in wax and resin, while incorporating other materials such as twisted wire and fabric dress. Her hybrid animal forms are truly spellbinding. Her work also crosses over into satirical, creating puppets that draw inspiration from the molly houses of the 18th century. She asks if she's guilty of cultural appropriation in this regard, but we give her a free pass.
Catriona Faulkner — Regular visitors to our website will know that we already adore Catriona's work. Made by sewing found objects onto fabric to create icons reflecting her life following a serious accident, it sparkles with intense detail that could leave a viewer busy for hours.
Jennie Sharman-Cox — Working in a wide variety of media, Jennie's box-art is sober and moving, with a heavy emphasis on the restrictions placed on women down the centuries, in everything from mere social etiquette to literal incarceration. The work is a powerful reminder that comfort is the enemy of progress.
Sørensen-Grundy — A collaboration between two milliners, Dan Sørensen and Sara Grundy are usually busy making hats for film, television, and fashion, but they also take time to make art for pleasure. The selection presented along the wall of the gallery are whimsical and beguiling. An elite level of craft of this type is always a joy to behold.
The exhibition runs from 6 - 11 August
